York Drug and Alcohol Service 

York Drug and Alcohol Service is run by specialists from Change Grow Live (CGL) and Emerging Futures and funded by City of York Council. They provide support for people dealing with issues related to drugs and/or alcohol. Support is free and confidential, and the range of support includes:

  • Clinical staff and recovery co-ordinators provide support tailored to individual needs and goals, including detox
  • Needle exchange
  • Naloxone (emergency medication to buy time for emergency services to arrive for an opioid overdose) kits and training
  • ASPIRE: 12 week abstinence-based day rehabilitation programme at Bowes Morrell House, Walmgate (Mon-Fri)
  • Connections with peer support and community groups / activities to support ongoing recovery

Self-referrals are very welcome, as are referrals from professionals

The Gate – for children and young people

The Gate York offers a range of support for children and young people up to 25 years affected by their own or someone else’s substance use. Their aim is to provide young people with the knowledge, skills, and confidence to identify and appropriately respond to risks associated with substance use.

Self-referrals and referrals from professionals are both welcome.

New Ways

The New Ways team is on hand to support patients who want support to make changes around how much alcohol they’re drinking but don’t need treatment for physical dependence to alcohol. New Ways is run by Change Grow Live (CGL) and funded by City of York Council.

New Ways work closely with the CYC Health Trainers who can also help people with reducing alcohol; you can refer to either team and they will work out who is best placed to help.

Free Naloxone training and distribution: York Naloxone Knights

You may be aware that very strong synthetic opioids known as Nitazenes are posing additional risk to people who use drugs in the UK and testing recently confirmed the presence of Nitazenes in York. Anyone can carry Naloxone, the antidote that buys time in the case of an opiate overdose, and access free training on how to use it (see York Naloxone Knights flyer).
