For the treatment of

Trauma, Cancer, Burns

Commissioning position

Surgery (including acute repair and reconstruction) is routinely commissioned and does not require prior approval for patients as part of treatment for:

  • Trauma or
  • Cancer or
  • Burns

Cosmetic surgical procedures for the correction of changes associated with age, pregnancy, weight or because of unhappiness with body image are not commissioned.

Summary of rationale

Cosmetic surgery is not routinely provided on the NHS. Exceptions are when:

  • there is a significant likelihood that the individual will gain much higher-than-average benefit from the treatment
  • there would be additional benefit through the avoidance of social care
  • there is a high likelihood that severe psychosocial dysfunction may be alleviated
