Guidelines on Management

Children over 4 years

Need to go to usual adult phlebotomy clinic along with their blood form issued by their doctor. These bloods can also be undertaken in primary care if phlebotomists have the appropriate experience.

If the child has learning difficulties or factors that require paediatric input, then book an appointment via ward 18.

  • Please supply prescription for Emla® 5% cream (1 x 5g + 2 dressings)
  • Useful Parent’s Guide to using Emla® before blood tests
     

Children under 4 years

Blood tests need to be organised via the Children’s Assessment Unit on Ward 18.

  • They need to be supplied with blood form
  • Please supply prescription for Emla® cream along with tegaderm
  • Useful Parent’s Guide to using Emla® before blood tests

Referral Criteria/Information

Organising a Blood Test on Children’s Assessment Unit

  • Please note it needs to be indicated clearly on form whether this is routine or urgent/ fasting etc.
  • Reception team then need to call ward 18 (on 01904 726017/6018) with the following information:
    • Name, DOB and NHS no of child
    • Information from blood form as to what bloods are needed and also if urgent or fasting blood test
    • Contact details of parent including their name and phone no.
    • The ward clerk who will then contact parent with an appointment.
