Oculoplastic Eye Problems

Commissioning position

Ectropion

Surgery for ectropion is commissioned if there is any of the following:

  • ocular surface exposure (increased risk of microbial keratitis)
  • chronic epiphora or ocular irritation
  • recurrent bacterial conjunctivitis
  • poor cosmesis.

 

Entropion

Surgery for entropion is commissioned if there is any of the following:

  • chronic ocular irritation
  • recurrent bacterial conjunctivitis
  • chronic reflex tear hypersecretion
  • superficial keratopathy
  • risk of ulceration and microbial keratitis

OR

  • to allow the patient to undergo another intraocular procedure more safely.

 

Surgery for Minor Eyelid Lesions (including eyelid papillomas, skin tags, cysts of moll, cysts of zeis)

Surgery is commissioned if the lesion results in:

  • recurrent infection OR
  • recurrent bleeding OR
  • significant impact on vision affecting functionality.

 

Treatment is not otherwise commissioned for personal preference on cosmetic grounds.

Summary of rationale

Ectropion

The aim of treatment is to prevent corneal damage.

Entropion

The aim of treatment is to prevent corneal damage and/or facilitate another eye procedure if the position of the eyelid would otherwise interfere.

Surgery for Minor Eyelid Lesions

The aim of treatment is to prevent corneal damage and preserve functional vision.
