Surveillance colonoscopy for patients with hereditary increased risk of colorectal cancer
For the treatment of
Early detection of colorectal cancer or related predisposing colon changes
Commissioning position
This intervention is only commissioned when used in accordance with the recommendations specified in the Academy of Medical Royal Colleges (AoMRC) Evidence Based Interventions (EBI) programme: Appropriate colonoscopy in the management of hereditary colorectal cancer - EBI
Summary of rationale
This recommendation is informed by the 2019 guidelines issued by the British Society of Gastroenterology, the Association of Coloproctologists of Great Britain and Ireland, and the United Kingdom Cancer Genetics Group. Heritable factors contribute to approximately 35% of colorectal cancer (CRC) risk, with nearly 30% of the UK population having a family history of CRC. Risk stratification allows identification of patient cohorts with a hereditary predisposition, facilitating targeted management and determination of those most likely to benefit from colonoscopic surveillance, as well as the optimal frequency for such monitoring.
