Carotid artery imaging (screening)

For the treatment of

Carotid artery stenosis

Commissioning position

This intervention is commissioned if:

  • a patient has symptoms of carotid artery stenosis or
  • risk stratification is needed when planning coronary intervention.

This intervention is not otherwise commissioned for people without symptoms of carotid artery disease, including those undergoing other forms of cardiac surgery and those diagnosed with peripheral vascular disease.

Routine follow up for patients with carotid artery stenosis but no symptoms from it, is also not commissioned.

Summary of rationale

The United States Preventive Services Task Force recommended against screening for asymptomatic carotid artery disease (latest review 2021) on the grounds that evidence shows the risk of harms from screening for asymptomatic carotid artery stenosis outweigh the benefits.
