Referral Criteria/Information
Reason for Referral
- Diagnostic uncertainty (Food allergy, allergic rhino conjunctivitis and recurrent Urticaria/failure of trial of appropriate treatment - Antihistamine).
- Consistent exposure to a particular food in any form, leads to significant symptomsà Generalized rash, angioedema, breathing problem or signs of poor circulation.
- Symptoms of Anaphylaxisàfood, aero-allergen or Idiopathic.
- Failure of medical management(Regular antihistamines, nasal steroids, monteleukast) of Allergic Rhino-conjunctivitis.
- Moderate to Severe eczema, where a referral is sought by the Dermatology team.
- For any Immunization related allergy concerns, please first refer to the ‘Green book on Immunization’, which is available online.
- Parental concerns despite appropriate treatment in primary care.
Process of Referral
- GP or Practice Nurse to refer to the Paediatric team, with a thorough history, photographs (taken by parents) and maybe first line Specific I gE to the offending agent.
- Triage of referral by the Allergy team.
- Allocation to appropriate team member (Nurse, Dietitian and Doctor).
- Patient assessment and management plan.
- Communication to referrer.
Reasons for Rejection of Referrals
- Incorrect pathway.
- No trial of treatment given in primary care.
