Referral Criteria/Information

Reason for Referral

  1. Diagnostic uncertainty (Food allergy, allergic rhino conjunctivitis and recurrent Urticaria/failure of trial of appropriate treatment - Antihistamine).
  2. Consistent exposure to a particular food in any form, leads to significant symptomsà Generalized rash, angioedema, breathing problem or signs of poor circulation.
  3. Symptoms of Anaphylaxisàfood, aero-allergen or Idiopathic.
  4. Failure of medical management(Regular antihistamines, nasal steroids, monteleukast) of Allergic Rhino-conjunctivitis.
  5. Moderate to Severe eczema, where a referral is sought by the Dermatology team.
  6. For any Immunization related allergy concerns, please first refer to the ‘Green book on Immunization’, which is available online.
  7. Parental concerns despite appropriate treatment in primary care.

Process of Referral

  1. GP or Practice Nurse to refer to the Paediatric team, with a thorough history, photographs (taken by parents) and maybe first line Specific I gE to the offending agent.
  2. Triage of referral by the Allergy team.
  3. Allocation to appropriate team member (Nurse, Dietitian and Doctor).
  4. Patient assessment and management plan.
  5. Communication to referrer.

Reasons for Rejection of Referrals

  1. Incorrect pathway.
  2. No trial of treatment given in primary care.
