CAMHS is a specialist assessment and therapy/treatment service for children and young people who are experiencing significant emotional or mental health difficulties.

The current age range covered by CAMHS is up to 18 years of age.  There is no lower age limit but usually CAMHS involvement does not usually begin by the age of four.

Types of issues and difficulties to be referred to CAMHS:

  • Moderate to severe depression
  • Moderate to severe anxiety/significant emotional/psychological distress or disturbance
  • Obsessions or compulsions
  • Eating Disorders
  • Moderate to high levels of self-harm
  • Severe behaviour problems from the effects of abuse or traumatic events
  • Bipolar mood disorder
  • Psychosis (over  14’s can be referred to PSYPHER)

CAMHS is not a service for normal reactions to adverse life events (e.g. bereavement, parental separation) or for difficulties that occur within the normal range of child development.  Other universal and targeted services can help with these issues.
