Smoking Cessation

Definition/Description

All patients resident in Hull identified as smokers should be offered referral to the stop smoking service for stop smoking interventions and treatment plan.

Smokefree Hull provides free stop smoking interventions for patients resident in Hull identified as smokers. All patients identified as smokers should be referred into the stop smoking service. Nicotine Replacement Therapy will be available to patients at no cost to the GP. Eligible patients can also access Varenicline under Pharmacy PGD issue Patients receiving behavioural support alongside pharmacotherapies are 4 times more likely to quit. Smokefree Hull is E-cig friendly providing support for patients identified as smokers who opt to use the E-cig or vapes as part of their treatment programme.

Guidelines on Management

All resident Hull patients identified as smokers should receive very brief advice on stopping smoking and be referred to the stop smoking service by their healthcare professional.  The stop smoking specialist will assess patients’ nicotine dependence and provide free stop smoking interventions at point of access. Treatment plans and interventions types are delivered to meet individual patient’s needs and include:

  • Individual 1:2:1 appointments
  • Group support
  • Walk-ins
  • Home Visits (This will be determined on need at the point of initial assessment)
  • Digital services including telephone support

ASK and record smoking status—is the patient a smoker, ex-smoker, or non-smoker?

ADVISE on the best way of quitting—the best way of stopping smoking is with a combination of medication and specialist support

ACT on patient response—build confidence, give information, refer, and prescribe. Patients are up to four times more likely to quit successfully with NHS support

Patients can also self-refer by contacting the service on 01482 977617 and/or walk-in to a Walk in clinic.  Free NRT and Varenicline is available for eligible clients (not eligible to pay for prescriptions) at no cost to the GP. 

Varenicline (champix) can only be offered to those who are medically appropriate, those who are not medically appropriate will need to be assessed and prescribed this from their own GP.

MECC (Make Every Contact Count) / Text referrals come into a generic inbox managed by the 24/7 Appointment Centre. The patient is called by a member of the team who either book an appointment or offer the walk in clinics. Clients can also contact 247111 direct and will be offered an appointment.
