Definition/Description
When requiring a referral to Nutrition and Dietetics in the community.
Red Flag Symptoms
Consider investigations for any referrals with unexplained unplanned weight loss with associated red flag symptoms.
Any child with a suspected IgE mediated allergy requires referral to a paediatrician
Exclude Red Flag symptoms
Any referral whereby enteral feeding maybe a consideration as a treatment option.
Dysphagia resulting in minimal diet and fluid intake

Referral Criteria/Information
Children
- Faltering Growth – Malnutrition
- Non IgE mediated allergy
- Confirmed Nutritional deficiency
Adults
- Malnutrition MUST score >2
- Enteral feeding
- Coeliac Disease
- Confirmed Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS)
- Dysphagia with associated nutritional risk
Referrals
Referral form required. These can either be sent through E-Referral system (RAS) or by e mail to CHCP.247111@nhs.net
Do Not Refer
Exclusions Children
- Enteral feeding
- Suspected IgE mediated allergy
- Infant reflux
- Eating Disorders
- Confirmed diagnosis of Avoidance Restrictive Food Intake Disorder (ARFID)
- Fussy eating
- Constipation
- Weight Management
- Coeliac disease
- Confirmed inflammatory Bowel disease
- Cystic Fibrosis
- Diets for Metabolic disease i.e. PKU/Ketogenic diet
- General Health eating
Exclusions Adults
- Total Parenteral Nutrition (TPN)
- Cystic Fibrosis
- Nasogastric or Nasojejunal enteral feeding
- Eating Disorders
- Confirmed diagnosis of Avoidance Restrictive Food Intake Disorder (ARFID)
- Active Inflammatory Bowel Disease
- Renal Diets under the renal team
- Diabetes
- Weight Management
- Referrals for end-of-life care
- All in patient mental health units
- Non confirmed food allergies
- Metabolic diets i.e. PKU/Ketogenic diets
- Breast feeding Mothers
- Hyperlipidaemia
