Thigh and buttock lift (not routinely commissioned)

For the treatment of

Skin redundancy which leads to deformities of loose, drooping skin with resultant contour irregularities following significant weight loss.

Commissioning position

This intervention is not commissioned and therefore should not be routinely offered to patients. Application for funding approval can be made, using the IFR process, by the clinician recommending the intervention, if their assessment is that there are exceptional reasons why their patient could benefit from it.

Summary of rationale

Whilst people seeking such procedures may have similar histories of weight loss to those seeking abdominoplasty, the functional disturbance of skin excess in these sites tends to be less and so surgery is less likely to be indicated except for cosmetic appearance, which is usually excluded from NHS provision.
