Commissioning position
This intervention is only commissioned if the following criteria have been met:
- Conservative treatment has been exhausted AND
- Complete or partial obstruction of the airway is causing significant difficulty breathing through the nose
OR
- Objective nasal deformity was caused by direct trauma, and the treatment is required at the time of, or soon after the acute episode and before permanent healing has occurred.
OR
- Correction of a complex congenital condition is required to improve function e.g. cleft lip and palate.
Treatment is not commissioned for personal preference on cosmetic grounds.
Summary of rationale
These interventions are not usually available on the NHS for cosmetic reasons but may be funded if needed to help someone breathe.
