Commissioning position
This intervention is commissioned if:
- drop foot is of central neurological origin (e.g. stroke, cerebral palsy, multiple sclerosis or spinal cord injury) and not lower motor neurone origin AND
- this intervention has been recommended as an outcome of a local MDT review.
This policy does not cover wireless/implantable FES for which there is a separate policy
Summary of rationale
Current evidence on the safety and efficacy (in terms of improving gait) of functional electrical stimulation (FES) for drop foot of central neurological origin appears adequate to support the use of this procedure provided that normal arrangements are in place for clinical governance, consent and audit.
