Red Flag Symptoms

Risk Factors:

  • Obesity
  • African or African Caribbean family background
  • On treatment with diuretics, angiotensin converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitors, beta blockers, angiotensin II receptor blockers (ARBs), or mineralocorticoid receptor antagonists (MRAs) can reduce levels of serum natriuretic peptides.
  • High levels of serum natriuretic peptides can have causes other than heart failure (for example, age over 70 years, left ventricular hypertrophy, ischaemia, tachycardia, right ventricular overload, hypoxaemia [including pulmonary embolism], renal dysfunction [eGFR less than 60 ml/minute/1.73 m2], sepsis, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, diabetes, or cirrhosis of the liver).

Guidelines on Management

Please note the tests below under GP responsibilities can be undertaken in either GP practice, CDC or acute setting at the discretion of the referring GP

Please note:

  • Investigations that fall under the CDC baskets of tests within the Heart failure pathway are not restricted to being carried out within the CDC, as it is recognised that within this specific pathway, the CDC will not function as a one stop service
  • There are 3 specialist routes into this pathway which are CHN, Specialist care and Secondary care
  • If bloods have been taken within the last 3 months, they do not need to be repeated
