Breast Screening

Definition/Description

Breast Screening is commissioned  to 80 Trusts nationally by NHS England. Locally Hull and East Yorkshires Hospital Trust (HEYHT) provides the screening service, following the protocoals and criteria detailed in the Breast Screening Programme (Service Specification No. 24).

Red Flag Symptoms

Women below the current eligible age group (unless they meet the high-risk criteria)

Women who are not eligible for NHS care

Women who have had bilateral mastectomy

Symptomatic referrals

Post diagnosis follow-up and management

The treatment of breast cancer

Women who do not meet the criteria for higher-risk screening within the NHSBSP.

Guidelines on Management

Women will be contacted by the service when they reach the age of 50 for their first screening.  The screening will be repeated every 36 months, as organised by the service until the woman reaches 70.  Pilots are in place nationally to screen a wider age range (47 to 73) and those at higher risk of developing breast cancer.

Women and their registered GP will be informed of the results.  Any requirements for referral for biopsy or to suspected cancer from screening, which will be organised by the services and the GP informed.

For suspected breast cancer please see Urgent Suspected Cancer - Breast
