Stroke service (not TIA)
Definition/Description
Assessment of new stroke when the patient has experienced a stroke elsewhere i.e. overseas or another part of UK. It is expected that these patients are on an antiplatelet agent as well as a statin. Minor strokes/ Non disabling strokes where the patient can still function at home. Incidental strokes picked up on scans for a different reason. Secondary prevention.
Red Flag Symptoms
Exclusions
- TIA's to be referred to TIA service via fax number 01904 725916
- Anyone with persistent symptoms suggestive of stroke that has not resolved and within 72 hours of onset requires admission unless the patient refuses to be admitted.
- The following are also excluded from this Stroke Service:
- Blackouts
- Confusion
- Dizziness
- Falls without specific focal weakness
- Memory loss

Referral Criteria/Information
Age: 18 Years and over
Suggested Investigations
To avoid delay in your patients care the following investigations are mandatory and must be carried out prior to referring your patient and the results must be attached to support the referral into this service.
Mandatory:
- FBC
- U&E
- LFT
- Glucose
- Cholesterol
- ESR
- TFT's
Suggested:
- ECG if possible
