Guidelines on Management

GP advice and guidance process with HEY Radiology Department

  • GP sends advice and guidance query via NHS eRS before referral to ensure it is appropriate and the correct modality
  • HEY Radiology regularly check advice and guidance to ensure a response within 48 working hours.
  • Queries will be filtered to gain a response from either the on call Radiologist, the Acute Cover Neuroradiologist or an Acute Cover MSK Radiologist
  • Radiologist will reply to the advice and guidance via eRS (this will be visable in the practice eRS work list)
  • If query is resolved, then GP must click 'end the conversation'.

PLEASE NOTE: Once a response has been received and no further action is required please ensure you click the “end conversation” button within the worklist screen. If the conversation is not ended it will remain on the provider’s worklist.

Referral Criteria/Information

Guidance for referral can be found in the Good Practice Guide

When referrals are received in US they will be triaged and if they meet the criteria set in the guidance they will be prioritised on clinical details and appointed appropriately.

If referrals do not meet the criteria they will be registered as a "radiology cancelled test". A report stating as such will be generated by a senior member of the US Team. Relevant advice regarding alternative imaging or pathways will be documented in the report which will be emailed via the radiology e-results with a yellow1 notification code to highlight the cancellation

Appointments

Non-Urgent Apointments

Patients contact the central booking office directly. Patients must have their completed referral form available.

Call 01482 622047 (Option 3) for Hull.

Alternatively an appointment can be posted to the patient by sending the completed referral form to: Central booking office, Radiology Department, Castle Hill Hospital, Castle Road, Cottingham, HU16 5JQ

Patients will be informed that the referral will be checked when they attend the department and that the examination may not take place if the request does not provide sufficient information

Radiology will accept a general abdominal assessment referral provided the GP has sufficient clinical concerns but the patient has vague symptoms. We recognise the value and reassurance that a normal scan result can offer. However, the referral has to be explicit that they are referring for clinical reassurance and be mindful that gross pathology only will be looked for (i.e. identifying small focal pathology will not form part of a general abdominal scan for reassurance).

Following advice and pathway changes, radiology are no longer able to accept referrals for US of the groin to assess for hernia. The false positive rate following these examinations is too high for this to be consider a safe test.
